This collection of essays traces the attempts of a writing teacher, over a ten year period, to understand theoretically what happens when students from diverse backgrounds learn to use academic language in college writing courses; her original assumption, based on the work of Paulo Freire, was that students could be inculcated with critical consciousness, an awareness of the injustices of social inequality, through teaching them academic discourse; over time she became increasingly skeptical about the politically liberating effects of academic discourse and concludes by calling for a theory of discourse that recognizes the need to argue for values and a pedagogy that can assist these arguments (blue cover with white lettering, in nearly perfect conditon except for previous owner's embossed stamp on half-title page)
