Varese's Absolutely the Best places two great rock & rollers -- Del Shannon and Eddie Cochran -- back to back for six songs apiece. While it isn't nearly enough of either, the five songs selected do a darn good job of summarizing their careers. Since Eddie Cochran had a much shorter career span and fewer hits, it is easier to pick his best. No one is likely to argue with the selections here. "Summertime Blues," "C'mon Everybody," "Twenty Flight Rock," and "Somethin' Else" are classics, and "Sittin' in the Balcony" and "Nervous Breakdown" aren't far behind. In Shannon's case, you could make a strong argument that the track selection is on the weak side. "Runaway," "Hats Off to Larry," and "Little Town Flirt" are perfect, but the rest are iffy. "From Me to You" is interesting because it was one of the first American covers of a Beatles tune; "I Go to Pieces" is too because it is the original version of the song that Peter & Gordon hit with. "Hey Little Girl," on the other hand, is not one of Shannon's best. None of the three songs were hits, either. A better choice may have been to include Shannon's higher-charting tunes like "Handy Man," "Stranger in Town," and the amazing "Keep Searchin' (We'll Follow the Sun)." Still, you can't really go wrong with any Eddie Cochran or Del Shannon, and the disc does a good job of introducing them. The only problem is that you will undoubtedly find yourself in the market for more music by both of them after you hear Absolutely the Best, so you might as well skip this and spring for longer hits collections right away. Cut out the middleman and save some money and time. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi
