Son of a Jewish origin military Toledo, born October 4, 1607. Study in Salamanca and then transferred to Madrid, where he lived the rest of his life. He was one of the loftiest poets in the court of Felipe IV. In 1645 he obtained, by the kings intervention, the habit of Santiago. He started writing in 1632, along with Perez Montalban and Calderon de la Barca, La tragedia EL monstruo de la fortuna. Later, he also collaborated with Velez de Guevara, Mira de Amascua and other authors. Felipe IV protected Rojas and soon the comedies went to palace; his satire against his colleagues apparently was so hard that some of the offended or some hit man gave him several stab wounds that nearly killed him. In 1640, for the premiere of a new theater built with all luxury, composed a custom-made comedy Los Bandos de Verona. El Monarca., satisfied with the playwright, was determined to grant the habit of Santiago: the first reports did not prove nor his nobility and cleaning of blood, rather they fogged it. But a second investigation which had the clerk a Quevedo, merited pleasure and was confirmed in El Habito (1643). In 1644, devastated the king by the death of his wife Isabel de Borbon and a little later his son, he ordered to close the theaters, which are no longer in life would open Rojas Zorrilla died in Madrid on January 23, 1648.
