This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1884 Excerpt: ...sperarent. Verbs of hoping almost uniformly take a future infinitive (sperat se diu victurum), but the present of the verb possum is constantly used, and here dispenses with the awkward form factum iri. The use of the simple and concrete form pugnandi for the English abstract term " hostilities" should also be noticed. The first sentence, then, stands thus: Adsunt interea hostium legati; postulant ut aliqui e nostris ad colloquium prodirent-habere se quae dicere vellent, quibus rebus pugnandi finem fieri posse sperarent. 155. The next sentence begins with the phrase "on... being ordered out." These combinations of "on," "after," with an apparent participle, may generally be turned either by a gMwm-clause (116), or, if merely short phrases, such as "on hearing this," by the ablative absolute (99). Here, however, the more graphic style already adopted of co-ordinate sentences may be maintained: Mittitur ad eos colloquendi causa unus e tribunis nostris. This is equivalent to Ad quos quum colloquendi causa unus e tribunis nostris missus essel (or prodire jussus esset). Notice in this clause the unemphatic use of unus and the word tribuni as answering best to our "superior officers" (centuriones would be a lower grade, legati a higher: duces would be "guides"). We may then, by the aid of the relative used co-ordinately, link on the next clause, and introduce the long passage in oratio obliqua which follows to the end of the passage: apud quern (" in whose presence ") regulus (" the petty king ") hunc in modum locutus est. These last words will express that the general drift of his conversation (not a set speech, which would be hujusmodi orationem habuit) is what is given. M...
