Black cloth binding with blind stamped double border on front, two gilt outlined panels on spine with gilt lettering within-quite bright and clear. Fleur de lys in black to spine. Quite clean with light wear to corners and spine head and heel, with hinge rubbed. Solid and tight sewn binding. Lime-green decorated title page. Short bio of author. Former owner name on verso of frontis. Inner hinge cracked at title page. Pages clean and unmarked, no tears, lightly toned. Ludovic Halevy (1834-1908) was a French author, playwright, librettist who, in collaboration with Henri Meithac, wrote the librettos for most of the operettas of Offenbach--buffonary, farce, light and ironic mockery. Halevy was also a noted novelist and short story writer. "L'Abbe Constantin", published in 1882, shortly after the Franco-German War, is a sentimental story of all good men and women; it was very popular, particularly after Zola's novels of nearly all bad men and women. 190/67 pages. 8.25 x 5.75 inches. 1902, P.F.
