It is very difficult to find a good critical account of the Faerie Queene that's not for specialists. For example, the remarks of C. S. Lewis and Camille Paglia, who are both adorers of Spenser, did not make sense to me, however many times I read them, until I had already been studying the FQ to the point of obsession. That's why it's helpful to have a nice, modest, well-written book from before the decline of literary criticism in the "post-modern" era; and Graham Hough's book is exactly that. I would also highly recommend his book "An Essay on Criticism".
