A book I've read three times, in three seasons of life--as a teen, as a young mother--as a great-grandmother. How do great societies fall into debauchery? This book tells us. How do great men maneuver fallen cultures and maintain their greatness? This book shows us.

Pillar of Iron
This is a splendid book about Cicero, herein portrayed as a martyr in the cause of the Republic of Rome. His enemies are those pandering to the mobs to win power--sounds like today. The author wrote this book in the 1960's and she had the twentieth century in mind, I think.

The best book ever written. The research makes the book come to life. You are there and it is hard to put down.

If you love historical novels.....
Story about Marcus Tullius Cicero. Excellent "fiction" woven into a factual story. A book every American should read. Once you have read Caldwell, todays authors seem quite tame. Lots of descripitive, which is missing in todays books.
