A nicely illustrated copy of Maria Eliza Rundell's famous cookery book, a bestseller throughout the nineteenth century, which provided recipes, as well as advice on how to run a home. Illustrated with a frontispiece, vignette title page, and five plates. This work is an octavo. Pages 28-29 and 168-169 are in duplicate. Collated, lacking four plates, facing pages xxii, xxiv, xxv, and 83, and lacking pages xxi-xxiv. 'A New System of Domestic Cookery' was the most popular cookery book of the first half of the nineteenth century, going over sixty-seven editions, and expanding almost double in lengths from revisions in later editions. The work was first published in 1806, and provided a short collection of recipes. It was applauded for its economic responsibility and cultural adaptability. The author also shows her opinion that housewives should have all of the mechanics needed to run a proper household, such as education and independence. Written by Maria Eliza Rundell, who was best known for this work. Her economic responsibility shown in this work meant that she was well admired across all classes, although she intended them for the middle classes. She is sometimes considered to be the original domestic goddess. She begun collecting her recipes, household tips, and herbal remedies, to send to her daughters once they got married. She sent this same collection to a family friend, who happened o be the publisher John Murray. Undated, dated from Copac from a copy held at Trinity College Dublin. Maria Eliza Rundell's illustrated cookery work. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, rear board is detached but presents. Slight loss to the spine. Spine is lifting to the front joint. Discolouration and marks to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. Front hinge is held by cords only. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with the odd spot and mark. Tidemark to the head of some pages. Repair to a closed tear to the fore edge of one of the unnumbered contents pages. Lacks p xxi-xxiv and four plates. Fair.
