This book of essays on history and how to do it is one of the most important of its kind. In my view a couple of the essays are unmatched and their consequences for the discipline have yet to reverberate through the academy. Febvre almost uniquely brings into the account human feelings and, I think (without necessarily mentioning the term) aesthetics. His results are a very subtle history that feels more complete and deep. Only perhaps Marx outdoes this in his historical writing, but Febvre can, perhaps, if 'reverse engineered' be used to elucidate Marx's method in such works as the 'Eighteenth Brumaire'. Important reading which has perhaps its greatest import for understanding art..
