James the second was King of England and Ireland as James II and king of Scotland as James VII between 1685 and 1688. He was the last Roman Catholic monarch to reign over the Kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland. The second surviving son of Charles I, he ascended the throne upon the death of his brother Charles II. He is best known for his struggles with the English Parliament and his attempts to create religious liberty for English Roman Catholics and Protestant nonconformists. Charles James Fox was a prominent British Whig statesman whose parliamentary career spanned 38 years. Fox became a prominent and staunch opponent of George III whom he regarded as an aspiring tyrant, and is also noted as an anti-slavery campaigner and a supporter of the French Revolution. In a calf binding. Externally, worn. Front board detached but present. Rear joint reinforced. Rubbed. Internally, generally firmly bound with first blanks and frontispiece detached but present. Pages bright with scattered patches of spotting. Fair.

None. Very Good. A first edition of Fox's uncompleted history of James II of England. First Edition. Featuring an engraved portrait frontispiece of Charles James Fox. With an appendix to the rear. Charles James Fox was a prominent British Whig statesman. Many Foxites, in the long wilderness years in opposition, turned to the writing of history for consolation and vindication. Fox was no exception. In 1799 he began work on a project that would be published in 1808 as A History of the Early Part of the Reign of James II. It was researched in London and Paris, with many French and English friends being recruited to help with particular manuscript collections. The work was never completed. The published version deals only with the events of 1685. Fox had hoped to go beyond 1688, in order that the virtues of William III should cast the vices of James II into even greater relief. DNB. Rebacked in calf with the original boards laid down. Externally, rubbed. Internally, firmly bound. Some scattered foxing and damp staining to the frontispiece and titlepage. Very Good.
