This is an expansive glossary of military terms from throughout history. Its usefulness is mitigated by the short and general nature of most entries, the dated scholarship, and by the usually small and invariably b&w photographs (many of poor resolution). However, the entry for mail (which is one of the longest in the book) is noteworthy because it depicts several non-standard knitting patterns. In addition, the number of entries allows for a good chance of finding a definition (or even a picture) of some very esoteric terms. This book covers equipment from all around the world--the usual English-language focus on European armors is not present here. Sadly this strength is mitigated by the fact that the author was a specialist in Eastern equipment and consequently included a number of errors in the otherwise more familiar Western equipment. The breadth of this book's scope makes it a valuable resource for anyone studying the field, subject to the concerns described above. See Tarassuk Leonid and Claude Blair?s 'Complete Encyclopedia of Arms and Weapons' for a narrower, but more reliable glossary.
