IT hath appeared in the foregoing dissertation, that the Abyfsins sirmly adhere to a tradition long received among them, that Menelech, whom they regard as their sirst king, was the son of Solomon; who having been educated under the care of his father, did, upon his return to his own kingdom, introduce the religion of the Jews among his countrymen. Some nevertheless maintain that this religion was long before received in Ethiopia, and assirm, that Moses, when he fled out of Egypt, retreated to the Ethiopians, and was their sirst lawgiver. This is certain, that whether they received this institution from Menelech the son of Solomon, or from Moses, or whether they learned circumcision from some descendant of Abraham, when they changed their place of habitation and went out of Asia into Africk, their sirm persuasion is, that they received this practice from the Jews. Mr Ludolf, who never sinds any thing blameable among the Abyfsins, except what they hold in common with the catholic church, endeavours to insinuate, R a that that there is no necessity of imagining that this nation borrowed the rite of circumcision from the Jews, since there is no possibility of discovering its original. These are his words in the 3d book of his Ethiopic History, " Qui " traditionem Habessinorum de regina Maqueda ad" mittunt, ii fere sunt qui putant eos cognitionem veri " Dei a tempore Solomonis habuisse; ritufque-Judai" cos, veluti circumcisionem, abftinentiam a cibis lege ' Mofaica vetitis, observationem Sabbati, conjugium 4' leviri cum glore, et similia, originem suam inde traxH.f isse. Verum cum isti vel cum aliis gentibus, vel '. cum Christianis primitivae ecelesiae; qui lese Judaeis accomodabant ut infra..."
