In 1988 Shirley Nicholson brought out this perfect analysis of the daily life of Marion Sambourne, a not quite ordinary Victorian wife.
Marion was the wife of the talented Punch cartoonist, Linley Sambourne, who flourished during the second half of the nineteenth century. In her diary, she recorded a detailed account of her world, which was bounded by her family, her house, and the community within which she lived.
To have these facts about a Victorian woman, described in her own words, would be fascinating in itself: but when you add the fact that she met, through her husband and his colleagues, many of the well-known artists of the time, who were among her closest friends, then the reader's interest is fully engaged.
Further excitement comes the fact that the house where she lived is still on view to the public, at Stafford Terrace in Kensington, where its original furniture, photographs, paintings and other artefacts are safely stored, as a living museum. Visiting Linley Sambourne house is like moving into another century.
Marion's social contacts included such well-known figures of her time as Luke Fildes, one of the leading Victorian artists, and his family, and Charles Dickens's daughter, Kate Perugini, who was herself a successful artist.
Nicholson has allowed Marion to tell her own story, in her own words, but she has divided her book into main headings, such as Home and Furnishings, Music and Theatre, and the London Season. She gives a full factual analysis of such categories as Money, Servants, Food and Dinners, and the family's holidays in Ramsgate.
Fascinating detail emerges in each category. For example, her husband - who worked at home - would only draw his cartoons from live models: his family posed for him, in appropriate clothing, and he took detailed photographs of them, to help him to produce his Punch cartoons, which were therefore extremely accurate and realistic. His work was prolific, and much of it is still in existence. This was the heyday of the magazine, under its editor, F. C.Burnand, when such contributors as George du Maurier were Linley's contemporaries. Punch depicted a lively worm's eye view of Victorian society, which we often mistakenly today consider to have been stuffy and hidebound, but which abounded in quirky characters. It rejoiced in laughing at the multifarious ironies of life, which were also highlighted by Gilbert and Sullivan in the Savoy Operas, at the Savoy Theatre. As Nicholson tells us, "The Sambournes went to every production mounted there."
We learn about the schooling of the children, the care of the family's horses, the journeys by railway to their holiday home in Ramsgate - a typically Victorian destination for Londoners.
I personally found the book unputdownable. it was intriguing to learn every detail of the life of this highly creative Victorian family, which fitted precisely into the rules of its own social stratum.
And - the final grand flourish of this family - the Sambourne's beautiful daughter Maud married Leonard Messel, scion of the banking family: and it was her grandson, Tony Armstrong-Jones, who married Princess Margaret.
Marion's social life consisted of tea parties with the local gentry, frequent dinner parties, many visits to the theatre, all of which are chronicled. It is as if we were able to take part for a time in a Victorian family's life: and to rub shoulders with the artistic community of the time.
I cannot recommend this book too highly to those who want to learn about the way in which family life was organised in the second half of the nineteenth century, and to understand something of the way in which a Victorian wife lived her daily life.
