This species of boiler, which was introduced originally by the Earl of Dundonald, is much used in Sweden and other continental countries, and is found to be very efficient. But a tail of soot is in some cases found to form on the side of each tube next the chimney. A hanging bridge, it will be observed, is introduced to retain the heat in the upper part of the flue in which the tubes are erected. In these particular boilers it was found to be an advantage to insert a short piece of tube in the upper extremity of each tube within the boiler. By this expedient the rapidity of the upward circulation of the water within the tubes was increased, as the length of the lighter column of water was increased while the length of the gravitating column remained without alteration. The boilers of the "Arctic," one of these vessels, were proportioned so as to have S3 square feet of heating surface to 1 square foot of fire bars. HH observed are flue boilers with the chimney passing through the steam chest, and it has been found by experience that flue boilers of this construction are somewhat more economical in fuel than tubular boilers of the ordinary form. Some of the flue boilers on the Atlantic have attained a longevity of fourteen years. There are four boilers in each vessel each containing five furnaces, making twenty furnaces in all. Two of the boilers are fired from the engine room, and two from a firing space abaft the boilers. The uptake of each boiler is situated at one corner where it forms a quadrant, delivering its proportion of smoke into the chimney. Some of the more recent vessels of the Cunard line are furnished with tubular boilers; but on the whole, the flue boilers are considered to be the most satisfactor...
