C H A P. XVII. Of SEARCHING. TH E Patient being laid on a horizontal Table, with his Thighs elevated and'a little extended, pass the Sound with the concave part towards you, 'till it meets with some resistance in Perinceo, a little above the Anus, then turning it without much force, pusti it gently on into the Bladder, and if it meets with an obstruction at the Neck, raise its extremity upwards by inclining the Handle of it towards you, or if it don't then slip in, K 4 with withdraw it a quarter of an Inch, and introducing your Fore-finger into the ReSlum, lift it up, and it will seldom fail to enter: There is some Art in turning the Sound in the proper place of the Urethra, which Surgeons not vers'd in this Operation cannot so well execute, therefore they may pass the Instrument with the Concave side always towards the Abdomen of the Patient, observing the same Rule at the entrance into the Bladder, as in the other Method. The cause of this obstacle is frequently a small projection of the Orifice of the Bladder in the Urethra, like that of the Os Tinc in the Vagina, which occasions the end of the Sound to flip a little beyond it. 'Tis not to be suppos'd that by searching one can positively judge of the size and form of a Stone, and indeed the frequency of the Fits, and violence of the Symptoms are a better Rule to go by, though whoever shall think himself capable of distinguishing absolutely the difference of Stones even by these Circumstances, will sometimes be mistaken, since the frequency and violence of the Pain dep...

Seller's Description:
pp. lii, 228. 8vo. Re-bound in full brown calf with gilt spine titles. Originally published with 14 copper engravings, this copy contains 13, lacking plate 2. Internally, the preliminary pages show a small stain to the top right corner, with some light general soiling. Afterwards, the pages are quite clean and bright. Sharp (1709-1778) was an English surgeon and author. He practiced from 1733 to 1757 at Guy's Hospital in London and became internationally famous after the publication of this title, the first edition of which appeared in 1739. The work commences with a Dedication to William Cheselden, to whom Sharp was bound as an apprentice for seven years while learning his art from the former (who was surgeon at St. Pancras's Hospital). Cheseldon published 'Osteographia' (Anatomy of Bones) in the same year that Sharp was elected surgeon to Guy's. The Dedication is followed by a Preface, and then by an extensive Introduction, with is itself divided into three chapters, dealing with 'the Nature and Treatment of Wounds, Abscesses, and Ulcers'. This is followed by the general treatise of 38 chapters.
