Excerpt: ...Therefore, Burt's rule is: " When running a parallel of latitude, if an object be observed due east or west, from any station, the correction of the course to touch the same parallel in the meridian of the object is equal to one-half of the angle of convergency between the two meridians, which pass through the station and the object." ln practice this accounts for taking one-half the difference between fore and back sights, and setting it off toward the pole for sighting a true parallel line. Or, the angle to start a line of sights, on an east and west line, is equal to one-half the angle of convergency. The formula for ascertaining the convergency, applied to government work either for a township or check, becomes: Cos lot. of south boundary; cos lot. of north boundary:: length of south boundary: length of north boundary. P, North Pole. ADC, Sighting Chord. A and C, Stations. AEC, Parallel of Latitude. AB, Tangent. With A P and G P as meridians, the station C would be observed an angular amount North of West of A B, the apparent and A E the true parallel, from the station A depending upon the latitude of that station. When running Standard Parallels the correction offsets can be used from each corner on the sighted line southward to proper corners on the parallel, or the correction angle for six miles may be tude of the eoutli boundary being 85 North, and length 42 miles, the latitude of the north boundary will then be 35 20' 52," as the east and west boundaries are 24 miles long, and the side of a township = 5' 13" difference of latitude. taken and set off from each township corner, applying the small Log cos lat 35 20' 52" 9.9115002 Log 3300 chains 3.5293393 Co log cos 35 0.0869355 Log 3345.98 3.5244840...
