After this, if the broken or lacerated Vessel is not in due Time restored and healed, the torn or wounded Parts will begin to fester and corrupt, which will soon bring on a deplorable putrefying Ulcer. In Persons of a weakly Constitution the Lungs begin to fester after a few Fits or Paroxysms of Blood-Spitting; but in others of a stronger Make, these Fits, while many Intervals are interposed, may be repeated several Years, before the wounded and leaky Vessel degenerates into a true Pthifis. Such Patients5 indeed, will continue lean and meagre, while the loose and iajured Parts admit mit a great Quantity of wholesome Humours and so robs Nature of her vital Stock of Nourishment, which is expectorated in a great plenty of white and pondrous Flegm, without any genuine Marks of its being purulent. There is a double Source of this dangerous and frightful Disease, one is the vitious and faulty Humours generated in the Blood, which by their intestine Conflicts with the wholesome active Principles excite a great Orgasm, or immoderate Expansion of the Spirits that inhabit the Veins and Arteries; and by this means the Current rushing with inordinate Force into the Inlets and Islues of the Lungs, breaks through in some Places into the small Cavities and Interstices of...
