After which a Church was ereded in Honour of St. Jolrn, and an Holpital for the Sick, whence they took the Name of Holpitalert. They bound themfelves to the ordinary vows of obedience, chaftity and poverty; and farther, to Defend Pilgrims againft the Hoftilities of Sa-ractns. They turn d a Military order, remarkable for their black Habit, and a Grofs of white waxed Cloth with eight Points: Into which Order many perfons of Quality lifted themfelves; and inftead of Hofpitalers, chofe to be called Knights of St. John. They were rooted and expelled out of Syria at a time, when no Affiftance could be had from the Weftern Princes, who had Game enough at Home, and were deeply ingag'd in inte-ftine Broils. Then they poflefs'd themfelves of Rhodes: which the Turks recovered out of their Hands in the year 15-22.;. The Emperor Charles $tb. in the year if?o, dealt and prevailed with them to accept of the Ifle of Malta for their Refldence: where they have long been a Fence and cover to Chriftendom from the Turks.
