I mentioned the great importance of obtaining the sanction of his Holiness to an examination only of it, and that it might be of more value to Ireland than the gift of 100,000; but he said he did not think the Pope would express an opinion on any temporal subject, especially in reference to other countries. I then said, that I presumed his Holiness was a temporal governor in his own States; 126 DIFFICULTY IN SEEING THE POPE. but he said they had no surplus population here, and that the land was divided into small proprietaries. It appeared to me that when the Pope condemned Communism, in his Encyclical Letter, it was a direct interference with temporal matters; but this, of course, I could not allude to.
