We had so often talked together about this subject, that it gave me pleasure to note how his opinions had been formed and decided, as actual observation confirmed or altered first impressions. Walter never talked much; but he was always clear, and expressed his thoughts accurately. But to go back. Rachel, after a few words on general subjects, went with me to the drawingroom to receive our lady friends, --heads of houses, glad to buy of us such useful articles as Jerusalem shops did not contain. Miss Brandon joined us, and Walter went to show his pictures to Mr Selwyn, for they were to be packed that day for their journey to England. I should like to have been present, and hear the remarks of one quite fresh and new to them, but could not leave my less agreeable task. In three or four hours the sale was over, and a list taken of the purchasers, and the articles bought by them. Miss Brandon kindly undertook to send all home after we were gone, for we could not spare them till then. True, it was not like any other sales that I ever had seen (excepting a similar one on our first arrival in Jerusalem): the purchasers were acquaintances, if not friends. The things were ticketed. " And may I have this?" or, " If these are not bought, they would be just what I want," was all that passed as each lady glanced around the room and saw what she needed.
