The personal character of the rash and weak Northern Prince and of the noble and forgiving monarch of Ireland are drawn with much distinctness; and the curious description of the fierce appearance of the hosts of Erin " with their tufted moustaches and long beards hanging to their waists, their overhanging eyebrows and short-gathered vests beneath cloaks of black sheepskin thrown over the shoulders" is only one out of many valuable details which this piece preserves of manners in mediaaval times in Ireland. The fettering of the foreign soldiers, each of whom was manacled by the foot to his companion, lest he should turn and fly before the enemy, the rough test of their courage from the furious hound set to spring unexpectedly upon them, the exhortations of the Druid, the importance attached to the order of precedence at a feast, are among the interesting details here preserved to us. The writer knew how to tell a story. We give one example of the vividness with which the incidents are placed before us. When Congal was gathering up his strength for a final onslaught before falling from the wound given him by the idiot, Cuanna, he meets the Prince of Desmond, a foster-brother of his own, brought up like himself at King Donnell's court. ' " Wherefore," he cries, " does the large, soft youth of the men of Munster come among us? " " To send thee speedily to thy final destiny among the terrible people of the devil," the Prince replied.
