Anyone familiar with Gustav Moreau realizes that he did an entire series of paintings around the story of Salome...either including Salome in the title or otherwise titled The Apparition. This is essentially the catalog of a show of paintings and drawings related to Salome from the Hammer Museum. So it is a scholarly work but not intimidating in anyway. And it includes many examples of preparatory drawings, photos of sources, and photos of the Musee Gustav Moreau. For the casual observer it is an engaging read and provides more depth into the methods and thought process of the artist than we often get. For the serious student of Moreau it also opens a lot of questions and suggests other lines of research and inquiry to pursue!
