With our high-tech medical procedures, and superior antibiotics, they too may reach my age, and cold turn out looking more youthful. The day I turned ninety, I couldn't believe my good fortune to have survived infancy during a flu epidemic, teen-years in the Great Depression, and my manhood in a terrible war. (I don't dare bring up my 64 years of marred life to two wonderful women.) So, what does a person do on his ninetieth birthday, and please don't laugh? I took on the job of finishing a memoir I began writing when I turned eighty. Since life at my age is uncertain, one dares not temp fate. And though this appears to be a human condition, my readers can circumvent such problems by following this advice: Should you ever run into this author while rushing to an important event, don't ask him for street direction, or the time of the day: You could end up listening to his story of his boyhood in Slovakia.
