Toying with the fuzzy sounds of '60s lounge pop and twisting them into moody electronica pieces, Ralph Myerz and the Jack Herren Band have been an important part of the Norwegian techno scene since the late '90s. But it took until 2002 for them to collect four of their best tracks and release them as A Special EP. This marks the first official release from the DJ and his percussionists, but this is more importantly a great place to find "Nikita." Re-recorded for the album, the moody single takes tribal beats, sultry cooing, and sparsely strummed guitars and turns them into a pulsing, sensual chill-out track. Heard in Volkswagen commercials prior to this release, the song stands as a monument of atmosphere. Also included is the sparse "A Special Morning," the group's first single and a great example of the irony-free environment that Myerz and his two percussionists can craft out of otherwise kitchy elements. Floating on a bed of softly played keyboards, "Clouds" is a sexy pop song that utilizes the glassy croon of Berit Killingberg Havag and provides the only traditional composition on the entire record. Finally, "Ménage à Trois" closes out the album with an average display of ambience that fails to live up to the awesome trio of tracks before it. Although Myerz and his crew provide only four songs after almost five years, the steamy A Special EP proves that the results can be worth the wait. ~ Bradley Torreano, Rovi
