Allen Eckert reminds me of James Michener in the way he writes with historical integrity. Each and every book is presented in a way that assures you of its authenticity and respect for characters. A Sorrow in our heart is perhaps the singular and only biography of a great American hero, Tecumseh, that has ever been written with a fondness towards fair play and decency for the man. If anyone loves the history of America and in particular the Ohio Valley, they should read this wonderful book. And any other of the Allen Eckert's related works. I have read them all and some of them twice. A real treat for a student of history.

A leader for all nations
Mr. Eckert's body of work reminds me of the show Quantum Leap where every episode the main character leaps into another person's body and walks in his shoes. This is the way Mr. Eckert writes his characters, just as if he had walked in their shows. This particular novel is one of 7 novels of the Narratives of America which are written in diary form in chronological order. He also provides ample footnotes to his books and to read the books without his footnotes would be like having the chaff without the wheat. Mr. Eckert has spent a life time writing about the Indians and the white man and how they each lived and fought and compromised. This is poignant book about an Indian who was never a chief in his own tribe. What I learned from all his books and what I particularly learned from reading this book two times is that there were rascals and heroes on each side. This was the making of the American continent and surely shows the compassion and love of the land by the Indians. Eckert also pulls out hidden speech from the historical documents that he uses to tell the tale in similarity to novels. I would also recommend Kenneth Roberts who earlier wrote about the winning of America. An outdoor production of Tecumseh's life has been done in Ohio for years and was written and produced by Mr. Eckert
