Great read, yet scholarly
This book is a gem waiting to be discovered.
The author is a recognized expert in Medieval Hebrew poetry and has published specialized works in that area. In 'A Short History of the Jewish People, he provides an remarkably concise and clearly written history of the Jewish people through the ages.
But this book is not only concise. It is also amazingly erudite. Scheindlin deftly informs the reader of the latest scholarly consensus on any number of issues of Jewish scholarship. He even finds space in this slim volume to include a translation of a Hebrew poem written in medieval Spain that reveals much about the interplay of cultures between Jewish culture and the society in which Jews find themselves. You will also find succint explanations of the Cairo Geniza, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and other numerous other areas.
There is something for everyone in this book. If you have no knowledge of Jewish history, it is a great introduction. Even if you have advanced knowledge in a number of areas of Jewish history, Scheindlin's narrative will put it all together for you.
