'A contemporary of Rowlandson and Gillray, though far more gentle in his wit, Kay produced scenes of Edinburgh characters and of comic events in contemporary Edinburgh society which won a popular if localized following. He depicted all the prominent figures and well-known personalities of the day. Kay's portraits of Adam Smith are considered 'the only authentic likenesses that exist of the great economist' (ODNB).
