" For a moment Willet looked as if he would fly into a passion at this question; but happening to catch a sight of his wife, who had been sitting quietly all this time, and who was trying to patch some things belonging to the younger children, the man held his peace. The clothing of his wife was certainly much the worse for wear, and the articles which she had on the little table before her were far from being new, or even decent in appearance. Thus it came to pass that Willet became very thoughtful all the rest of the evening, and some time after, just as Sam was going off to bed, he heard his father answer: " No, Sam, it don't pay to drink; and, please God, I'll sign the pledge to-morrow." All this took place three years ago, and if you go down to Lansingborough you will find that Sam has been apprenticed to Mr. Hyson, and that his father has found out by experience that it pays, both temporally and spiritually, to sign and keep the pledge. Benny's Radishes.--It was late in summer when Benny Towers found a large paper of radish-seed that had been left over from the spring gardening. Now, he sowed his radishseed in a corner of the garden and raked it in. Then he told his mother about it, and how much money he was going to make selling his radishes. Soon the radishes peeped out of the ground, and so abundant were they that he had to keep thinning them out....
