Not illustrated. 1879 Excerpt: ...Thus, a draw-plate is provided for, 2 feet 6 inches in width, or, like the length of the cylinders, half the width apart of the inside plates. The longitudinal, or side, plates are bound together also by transverse plates placed vertically. There is one, J-inch thick, at the extreme end, embracing all the four plates. At the front end, each pair of plates is tied by a short i-inch plate, and all the plates are efficiently connected by the buffer-beam of hard-wood, 6 inches thick and 16 inches deep. The buffer-beam, of a comparatively accommodating material, supplies the most suitable means of binding together the fore-ends of the frame-plates--seeing that the cylinder-stays come up to within 13 inches of the beam. The transverse "motion-plate," f-inch thick, which comes in half-way between the cylinders and the driving-axle, is useful in stiffening the long extent of frame between these parts; it is, indeed, essential for enabling the inside frame-plates to sustain, without buckling or tremor, the stress of the steam between the cylinders and the driving-axle, through a distance of nearly 8 feet. The motion-plate itself is thoroughly stiffened by the four pairs of guide-bars which proceed from the cylinders, and are bolted to it, and by its attachment to the barrel of the boiler overhead. Then there is a pair of stay-bars inserted between the axle-guards of the inside plates, fore and aft of the axle. These bars perform the duty of giving a bearing to the links by which the springs for the drivingaxle are connected to the frame; and they obviate the lateral twist which would result from the pull of tho spring-links if they were attached direct to the frameplates at the sides. Finally, each pair of plates is covered by a platform or foo...
