Excerpt from A Review of Aristotle's System of Ethics: A Prelection Read Before the Vice-Chancellor, and Council of the Senate, Feb, 16, 1867 The end then of the state and the individual, of man in society and in a state of isolation - if indeed that were pos sible, for a man's nature can only be developed in society, and only to the highest degree under the institutions of a perfect state; man apart from society must be either more or less than a human being, a God or a brute, Polit. Init., and here is another point of connexion between Politics and Ethics - is the same, and that end is happiness, the uni versal aim. A very brief summary of Aristotle's views of happiness as the end of human action, must here suffice, to enable us to dwell principally on what is still more peculiar to himself and his system, his doctrine of virtue, and list of the virtues. But as this end of all human action must necessarily give their special character to his Ethical views, it cannot be alto gether passed over.
