Or white, silky, shining crystalline needles, or a crystalline powder, odorless, and having a very bit ter taste. Permanent in the air. Soluble, at 15??? C. (59??? in 28 part-s of water, and in 30 parts of alcohol; in part of boiling water and in 2 parts of boiling alcohol; almost insoluble in ether or chloroform. When heated to 198??? C. F.) salicin melts, yielding a colorless liquid which, on cooling, congeals to a crystalline mass. Upon ignition, it is consumed, leav ing no residue.
