THE departure of Lucien and his wife was deeply regretted by the Bernadottes. The former had returned from Romeonly to find Napoleon inexorable. He would do everything for Lucien if he would sacrifice his wife and declare his children illegitimate; nothing if he refused. Lucien should not live in Europe, or at any rate only in a distant part of it; certainly not in France. Lucien declined to give up his wife and children, or to accept invitations to family festivities where his wife was not invited; and, horrified at the murder of the Duc d'Enghien, he exclaimed to her-- " Alexandrine, he has tasted blood, let us get away." In a fragment left at his death, written in 1837, he says: " The details of this evening, the last I was to pass in France, are ever present to my mind. ... It was Easter-eve, 1804, the four travelling carriages were ready and loaded in the courtyard of the hotel, rue Saint-Dominique. . . . The servants went to and fro, the post-horses were ordered to be harnessed at daybreak. . . . My dear brother Joseph, with a sorrowful expression on his kind, handsome face, was walking with me up and down the long gallery of pictures for which I then had such a passion, and which were to begin to be packed for Rome after my departure.
