The book draws on official prison files that reveal the depth of state paranoia around Mandela and the power that he wielded in spite of his status as a prisoner. There are fascinating records of negotiations and formal complaints. From Mandela's own files there are photographs, diaries, notes scribbled for "Long Walk to Freedom", all previously unpublished; and other archival material collected which reflects the life in jail of the world's most famous political prisoner. Mandela is said to easily match his jailers in diligent record keeping. The book is rich in imagery and provides genuine and moving insights into Mandela's life. The book is a collaboration between the Nelson Mandela Foundation and Penguin South Africa and is being published by Penguin companies around the world.
