The perusal of the City news is, however, becoming much more important to a wider circle of the reading public. At one time, the Jones's, the Smith's, and the Robinson's were only interested in the movements in the price of the shares they held in City tea-shops, far-away rubber plantations, or in gold mines in South Africa or Australia. The war has changed all that. We still watch our shares rising or falling in value, but our City editor having taken upon himself to initiate us into the darker mysteries of the appreciation and depreciation of money, we have commenced to turn to his writings to see how the quotation for the pound sterling is progressing in other countries, and step by step the columns on the City page are becoming something more than a closed book to the anaemic denizens of our over-crowded railway carriages.
