It is printed with interleaved pages, the blank ones being intended for additional notes on localitv and distribution, and for corrections. A copy is sent to every amateur and professional botanist in New Jersey and the surrounding parts of other States as far as known. It is requested that the books be returned to Prof. George H. Cook, State Geologist, New Brunswick, N. J., at the close of next season (1882), with all additions and corrections that botanists may report or suggest. It is hoped to obtain in this manner all that is at present known about the geographical and geological distribution, and frequency of occurrence of all the plants growing wild within the Stale. The final revised catalogue will be made up from these data at a future time. LITERATURE OF THE SUBJECT. The following authors have been consulted in the work of compilation: John Torrey, M. D. A Catalogue of Plants growing spontaneously within thirty miles of the city of New York. Albany, 1819. This is a one-hundred-paged pamphlet, containing many valuable notes on the occurrence of plants in the counties near New York. Additional copies may be obtained on application to the State Geologist. (vii) Vlll PREFACE. P. D. Knieskern, M. D. A Catalogue of Plants growing without cultivation in the counties of Monmouth and Ocean, N. J., being part of the Annual Report of Geological Survey of New Jersey, for 1856.
