Although it is true that we are still ignorant of the more subtile agents which exist in the vast chain of causation, the laws which regulate the various phenomena of nature, are sufficiently known to afford the most beneficial assistance to every branch of the arts and sciences: and the most recon dite of scientific discoveries, as well as the most valuable inventions and improvements in the arts, are not more demonstrative of the truth of this assertion, than are those of the most simple characters.
