Antecedentia, the apparent motion of a planet from East to West contrary to the order of the signs, as from Taurus towards Aries. i Apheliont Aphelion, or Aphelium, that point in the orbit of the earth or a planet in which it is at the greatest distance from the sun. The opposite point of the orbit, in which it is nearest to the sun, is called the Perihelion. Apogee, or Apogeon, that point in the orbit of the sun, moon, &c. in which it is at its greatest distance from the earth. The opposite point of the orbit, in which it is at its nearest distance, is called the Perigee. The Apogee of the sun is the fame as the Aphelion of the earth, and the Perigee of the sun the fame as the Perihelion of the earth. Apses, or Apsides, are the two points in the orbit of a planet where it is at its greatest or least distance from the fun or earth. The farthest is called the higher Apjis, and the nearest the lower Apsis. The former is mostly called the Aphelion or Apogee, and the latter the Perihelion or Perigee. A right-line or diameter which joins these two points is called the Line of Apfides. It is the longest or transverse diameter of the ellipsis or orbit of the planet. Armillary Sphere, an artificial sphere composed of a number of circles, which represent the several great and lesser circles, &c. of the universe, such as are defined in the foregoing Sections. Attraction, or Gravitation, is that univerfal property of matter ty which all bodies mutually tend to each other. The principle or law by which two bodies tend to unite is always in a ratio directly as their mass, and inversely as the squares of their distances asunder.
