The superlative of eminence is either the superlative in its original form, freunblid)ft, f)6d)ft, or that form, preceded by the preposition auf/ and the definite article baS contracted into aufS, with the termination of the acc. neuter in the 2nd form of inflection: as, er rebete mid) bSflid)ft an, or er rebete mid) aufS t?6f= lid)fte ait/ he addressed me most politely, i. e. with the greatest politeness; id) grtife (c)te freunblid)ft, or aufS freunblid)fle, I send you my most friendly compliments. This superlative, however, is also produced by putting b6d)ft or auferft before the adverb: id) rourbe auferft freunblid) oon ibm empfangen,1 was received by him in an extremely friendly manner; er f ommt auperft felten ju mir, he comes very seldom to me; er betragt fid) t)6d)ft artig gegen mid), he behaves very politely towards me. Note.--The termination enS is added to the original form of the superlative of several words, to express the superlative of eminence: as, t)6d)ftenS, at the highest; meiftenS, at most; rcenigftene, at least; fpateftenS, at the latest.
