Sure I am, however, that every honest observer will allow that to the energetic measures pursued both by the civic authorities and the Board of Health, may be fairly attributed much of the mitigation of the malady and the consequent preservation of life." One of the principal features connected with this second visit of cholera was an indignant outcry from the people regarding the reckless manner in which the bodies of the dead were buried, and the overcrowded condition of the burial grounds. But this outcry was more the result of excitement and terror than aught else. The authorities performed their disagreeable duties as carefully as possible in the circumstances. Yet once again did the awful scourge visit our devoted city and make considerable havoc. This was in the year 1853-4. It commenced about the middle of December 1853, and by the end of the year the number of deaths had reached 144. It continued to rage during the early months of 1854, gradually declining towards the month of May, until on the 12th of that month, the city was reported free from the malady. This happy state of matters continued only however for about a fortnight, for it again broke out about the 1st June, 18 cases being then reported in the City parish, and a number of deaths. The second outbreak appears to have been quite as virulent as the first, although no daily reports were given in the columns of the Daily Mail after 12th May, and it was allowed to drag on its weary way almost without notice.
