Difficult to describe this book. It doesn't fit neatly into any category, which is probably why I think it's so great. It's a memoir, it's literary criticism, it's a multiple biography, it's a bibliography (it gave me the names of many other interesting books), it's a series of interviews, and a bitter-sweet look at Mississippi. A state with some very dreadful racist and disturbing history, but has produced a large number of good writers. The author also describes his own direct experiences, and is truly humble in the way he describes himself. It also has some interesting photographs as well. I've read it several times. I fully recommend it to anyone with an interest in how a region not known for education, produces a number of extraordinary artists.
