For my description thereof I am indebted, at least as far as the colours are concerned, to F. Ellon, op. cit. Saliceto of Bologna.1 The frightful rapidity of the spread of the disease appears to be indicated by the fact that the archer of the Tavoletta is actually outrunning and overtaking his arrows. Almost more notable than the Tavoletta just described is that of 1468, in which Professor Mussini sees the manner of Francesco di Giorgio Martini, but which Mr. Berenson, as I think mistakenly, attributes to Benvenuto di Giovanni. It represents Peace and War, not from an ideal stand-point, but as they would appear to a minister of finance having regard to their economic consequences. In April 1468, Pope Paul II. succeeded in bringing about a general pacification of Italy in which Siena was included. The event was celebrated with great public rejoicings and, in memory thereof, the officials of Gabella caused this Tavoletta to be painted. To the left we see a group of citizens who receive money from the public treasury, while above them hovers Peace, a nude female with an olive bough in her hand and the legend H, ec (pax) Cives Ditat. To the right are soldiers of fortune to whom the Camarlingo tenders their pay.
