A Perfect Ending
A Perfect Ending. I have read articles, posts and advertisements about this movie and they, almost to a adjective, describe it as a Lesbian Love story. I would not. The two main characters, are or were in straight relationships. Paris?s memories are all about the man she married. Rebecca?s reactions to her lesbian friends culture, and the hesitancy she has in being involved with a woman, are front and center.
These two women are brought together by pain. Pain of one for what is to come, vulnerabilities and frustration in her life and pain of the other, for what happened in the past. One is dedicated to give back and one for the things she hungers for. This dedication and hunger brings them together. Rebecca?s fear creates a kind of ?bristle dance? between the two of them, trying Paris?s patience and dedication. She resorts to a blistering stare and almost leaves an appointment, thinking to wash her hands of Rebecca., but Rebecca?s vulnerability had touched something deep in side of Paris. Paris?s confidence and caring, finally, breaks through Rebecca?s fear and trust is begun.
From the sense of wanting to give back and the caring Paris has for Rebecca, Paris strives to fulfill the hunger Rebecca has. That dedication and caring, births a gift inside of Rebecca., a gift of confidence and strength. From the joy and passion that blooms in Rebecca, combined with the love that grows in her, for Paris, she is able to help Paris put the shattered pieces of her life back together.
So? What makes a Lesbian Love story Lesbian? Is it the sex? Is it the love and caring? Is it the wanting to make a life with someone? The representation of physical acts in this movie are mesmerizing. I have watched this movie many times and sometimes I shake my head and ?just know this is real, not a movie. My compliments to Jessica and especially Barbara. Not implying one is a better actor than the other, but one is called to expose real life venerability, and shows just how beautiful she is. Does the love and caring make it a Lesbian Love story? That Rebecca is able to say goodbye and Paris is able to develop her art, are such major milestones in this movie. But, aren't those qualities in any good relationship? I think they are more universal. We don?t know what direction Rebecca would have taken in her life and the story ends before we know what happens after the art show. So much fun to imagine.
I think this is a universal love story. I am a woman that prefers to combine those qualities with another woman, so I am happy to see two women in these roles, but the story could have been written with two men or a man and woman. It is about two hurting people, with shattered lives, that come together and Love puts them back together.
Nicole Conn, and Marina, I recognize your heart in wanting to see a community made whole. I salute and admire you greatly.
