Noah Davis was born into slavery in Madison County, Virginia in 1804. Early on, he learned the shoemaking trade. He joined the Baptist Church in 1831 and soon became a licensed minister. Noah Davis, a Colored Man" in 1859 in an attempt to raise money to free his two remaining sons -- as well as to help his struggling church. In this narrative, Reverend Davis describes his life in slavery, his conversion to the Baptist church and his efforts to free his family.
