'Haunting...sensitive...the relationship between the lovers is utterly convincing. A fine, moving novel.' PUBLISHERS WEEKLY 'Dianne Highbridge's novel is that rare thing - a love story for adults. It's smart, delicate, sexy, and deeply affecting.' ELIZABETH BENEDICT 'This spare novel is riveting. I read it in one sitting, mesmerised by the author's talent. It is daring, moving and absolutely true to life.' SHEILA BALLANTYNE Aly is a thirty-five year old high school English teacher, divorced, not thrilled with her job, a little lonely. One day she takes the train instead of driving home and is recognised by Tom, the son of her best friend. After this accidental encounter, they meet again, and again. Aly finds herself looking forward intensely to these interludes. Tom is tall, handsome, an athlete and intelligent - even a gifted musician. The moments they spend together become the most meaningful part of their lives. Then he wants more. How can she resist? They are perfectly suited in every way but one. Tom is a much younger man. This is a moving account of love's ambushes and surprises, deftly told in spare and sensuous

I can't urge you strongly enough to ignore the steamy cover photo on most editions of this book, AND the dramatically salacious title! Both do a disservice to what is a fiercely moving, wonderfully intelligent exploration of the nature of love and falling in love. The real world is on every page of this fantastic book, and the characters are drawn with impeccable realism. This is one of the best evocations of what it really feels like to come to love another person that I've ever read - no over-sweetening, no sugar-coated conclusions, and yet almost always beautiful, so beautiful there will be many passages you'll want to read again instantly, or copy out. Highly recommended.

Older woman/younger man
The weight of the inevitable hesitation, stumble and then fall into love occurs on the part of the woman, but it was engineered by the very young man to happen in the first place. The reader has a sense of holding one's breath as the story unfolds like peering under a leaf for a lost pet rabbit and hoping with all one's heart that it is alive and unharmed. The situtation is crushingly tender, romantic, and blithely impossible from any outsider's view. But inside the lover's hearts, minds, and private hours it becomes plausible and as right as any perfectly suitable match goes. This was the most delicious read that is sure to make the reader pause and wonder. It made me want to cheer the couple as they flew in the face of convention. The characters are as lovable and finely tuned as they are real. They may live next door.
