The Newberry Consort was inspired to create the program after touring in Durango, Mexico, and observing the vital mix of cathedral and street music at Christmastime. The album was taken from a live concert that has been successful and presented multiple times, featuring slightly different music each time. Where this presentation expands upon earlier ones is that it offers a physical representation of the sacred-secular mix, with the female singers of the Newberry Consort behind a screen in the role of nuns, performing the sacred selections, while EnsAmble Ad-Hoc, in the role of a villancico group of the day, played front and center.
