Just about any book written by Jane Kirkpatrick is worthwhile. This book is especially so because it is written about a real woman in a real historical time fram. Most historical novels are just that...novels.I don't know how she does it, but Jane Kirkpatrick takes the reader into the mind of the characters in this book. Emma was a real person, not a perfect wife or a perfect mother but having the desire to be that perfect person. The overwhelming conflicts she faced were so real I found myself gripping the book as I read it as though I were there with Emma. I felt her pain, her will not to be controlled by others and the desire to do that which others thought worthless. I cheered her on when she stepped out of the expected role of a woman of her time and spoke out when in the company of men. The role of women in the pioneer days was hard. They were expected to cook, clean and rear the children as well as work alongside their men when called upon. But to have an opinion and to speak it out was not the expected role. I was sorry when I came to the end of the book but I'm happy that Jane has written another book to continue the story of Emma and her family.
