The want of maritime skill in the sea men; the limited means they possessed of ascertain ing the course, or actual position of the vessel, being guided by land marks, and the heavenly bodies alone, they were incapable of keeping the sea on the event of a storm; and never ventured boldly across it, except during the halcyon davs of sum mer, for they could not anchor, lie-to, or run before the wind in violent gales.
