This book of historical fiction, set in 19th century Philadelphia, is similar to Jane Austen's EMMA. It's about a strong-willed woman who is preoccupied with matchmaking and social causes, and doesn't realize until later that she is in love with the man-next-door, a friend who has also fallen for her. It also addresses some of the issues of the day: child labour, unsafe working conditions, indentured servants, and abuses of naval widows by nefarious landlords. Mia Stanley is a woman ahead of her times, and Garrett Wilson is a regular hero. I loved this budding romance of good friends. It also had some unexpected action.
