The impeachment and removal from office of Governor Rod Blagojevich was the culmination of the most momentous series of events in the Illinois Legislature since its organization in 1818. Blagojevich was arrested on December 9, 2008, on charges he conspired to sell his office many times over--including putting a price on the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama. After an investigation, the Illinois House passed an impeachment resolution and Blagojevich was tried by the Illinois Senate, with his conviction coming on January 29, 2009.
