"History of the Modern World" is a careful, well-written narrative of major events from the late Middle Ages to the political and religious conflicts at the beginning of the twenty-first century. It offers a wide-ranging survey that helps readers understand both the complexities of great events (e.g., the French Revolution, the First World War, or the collapse of great imperial systems) and the importance of historical analysis. It also provides a careful summary of the modern political changes that have affected the social and cultural development of all modern cultures (see table of contents for the extent of Part 1). Throughout the book's lifetime, "A History of the Modern World" has been hailed as an elegantly written historical narrative, filled with analysis and balanced historical insights as well as its traditional attention to the processes of historical change, conflict, and political transformations. The tenth edition has been updated to include the clear maps, the survey of global economic connections, the chronologies, the illustrations, and the up-to-date bibliographies that today's students need and expect.

A Classic Study of the Modern European History. Although it is dated, it still reads with ease and gives compact presentation of the world since 1815. During the 50's and 60's, it was the required reading for undergraduates on most college campuses.

Wonderful
When I was at the university I've been reading the Italian translation of this book. Now that I read it in English it just remind me again how wonderful and well written this book is.

A good standard text
Palmer & Colton's history text has been a standard-issue first-year university text for many years now, so standard, in fact, that it is the "text of choice" for the Advanced Placement program. It has been mildly edited over the last many years, but is recognisably similar in all the editions. Readable, and not strongly opinionated for a North American reader - obviously, a European might want some shifts in emphasis, but I don't think any would be strongly unhappy.
I would recommend to any AP teacher that one buy an older edition, since the price is obviously more acceptable than the most recent would be, and the books are just about the same.

great historical survey textbook
Even though the version I ordered was from 1964, this book was very useful in providing a sweeping account of European history. As I purchased this book on the recommendation of one of my History Professors as an additional resource in preparation for taking my Masters Comprehensive Exams, I started my reading at Chapter Nine. Even then I did skip around some as was necessary to research particular sub-topics of history, rather than read in its entirety. However, I still found the book interesting, informative and enlightening. I highly recommend it to someone who might need a supplemental reader for a basic Western Civ course or easy reader for personal edification.
